In June, Frankfurt hosted it's annual Licht and Rosen (rose and light) Festival at the Palmengarten. A friend had invited us along and to be honest I wasn't really too sure what to expect, but don't you find that the nights where you go without any expectations are the most fun?
Believe it or not, this is the one time a year where visitors to the Palmengarten are actually allowed to sit on the grass! All other times of the year it is strictly off limits. The festival has bands and DJ's set up around the grounds, along with food stalls and beer stands (obviously! We're in Germany, right?). You can also bring your own picnic's, which we opted for.
I would love to be able to tell you that we walked around the gardens, admiring all of the gorgeous flowers, but......we were too busy socialising! As we sat, we were able to watch the grounds fill with visitors and their bags and bags of tea lights to be used to create their own masterpieces once it was dark. I was quite surprised with the number of people that had ventured there to take part in the Festival....this is obviously a big event on Frankfurt's festival calendar!
As night fell, the grounds came alive with all of the tea lights. For me, this was the big surprise of the evening, as I had no idea that this was part of the festival (this is what happens when you're unable to read all of the info on the website promoting the event because it's all in German). We were amazed with some of the creations that people came up with.
To conclude the evening, we were treated to a fabulous fireworks display. The Palmengarten is definitely worth a visit, Licht and Rose Festival or no Festival. We will be heading back next year, but with plenty of tea lights!
